My very favourite thing in CRPGs is when you’re on an epic journey to save the world from an ancient evil, and in the course of a random side-quest you stumble upon a different, completely unrelated ancient evil, kill it, and take its stuff. Like, a. exactly how many resurgent apocalypses are on the brink of destroying this particular world? b. how bad is their operational security that you can accidentally stumble across them while running an errand for the local blacksmith? and c. as random as it is for the player, imagine what that must look like from the other side! A thousand years of careful scheming down the tubes because a trio of magic teenagers just rolled up out of nowhere, smote your prophesied messiah, riffled his pockets for loose change, and left. That’s gotta do things to your worldview, is what I’m saying.
